Обзор Norton Secure VPN: краткое заключение экспертов

Norton Secure VPN offers good security, very fast speeds, good features, and has a very intuitive interface. It comes with industry-standard security features like 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, a no-logs policy, and secure protocols. In speed tests conducted in the US, Norton Secure VPN only decreased speeds by an average of 40%, which is comparable to some of the very best VPNs in 2022.

It’s also good for streaming, as it can access top sites like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime. And it’s also one of the most beginner-friendly VPNs on the market, with well-designed and user-friendly apps for Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS.

Norton Secure VPN also offers:

  • Wi-Fi Security.
  • An ad blocker.
  • Full leak protection.
  • And more …

While Norton Secure VPN is a good VPN, it has many issues I can’t ignore — torrenting is only allowed on dedicated P2P servers (all of which seem to be located in the Netherlands), and the provider keeps logs of user IP addresses. Plus, the split-tunneling feature doesn’t work most of the time, the VPN can’t get around firewalls in restrictive countries, and the 24/7 live chat support and phone support is inconsistent with resolving questions and troubleshooting issues.

Norton Secure VPN offers monthly and yearly plans for 1, 5, and 10 devices (each plan includes the same features). Norton Secure VPN includes a 60-day money-back guarantee for the yearly plans and a 14-day money-back guarantee for the monthly plans. Norton Secure VPN is also included in Norton 360, which is the best antivirus on the market in 2022.

Norton Secure VPN Full Review

Norton Secure VPN Full Review

I spent a few weeks testing and researching Norton Secure VPN to see how it compares to other top VPNs.

And I can safely say Norton Secure VPN is a user-friendly VPN that has really good speeds and is good for basic uses like online browsing, hiding your activity from your internet service provider (ISP), and accessing some geo-restricted content.

Norton Secure VPN’s easy-to-use apps have an intuitive design that make it simple to navigate for someone who has never used a VPN. You can connect to a server with 1 or 2 clicks, the features are easy to find and use, and most of the functions in the Settings tab include brief explanations.

However, Norton’s VPN isn’t good for torrenting because it only supports P2P downloads on dedicated servers, which all seem to be located in the Netherlands. If you’re only interested in torrenting, I recommend checking out ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access instead.

Norton Secure VPN Features

Norton Secure VPN has industry-standard VPN security features:

  • 256-bit AES encryption — Norton Secure VPN protects your data with end-to-end, bank-grade encryption.
  • No-logs policy — Norton Secure VPN doesn’t log online traffic and files that you download, but it logs your IP address.
  • Kill switch — This feature shuts down your internet access if the VPN connection drops (it’s available on Android, Windows, and macOS).

There are VPNs that have much better kill switches than Norton Secure VPN. For example, PrivateVPN allows you to choose which apps are forced offline if the VPN disconnects, and Mullvad VPN and VyprVPN let you configure the kill switch to shut down internet access when you’re not connected to a VPN server — this protects you from accidental traffic leaks if you forget to connect to the VPN before going online. But Norton Secure VPN’s kill switch is still decent and works as intended.

You get access to 2 VPN protocols: WireGuard and IKEv2/IPSec. I’m happy to see that, as both protocols provide strong security and very fast speeds. WireGuard is available on all of Norton Secure VPN’s apps, while IKEv2/IPSec is available only on Windows. On the Windows app, the VPN client will automatically choose the best protocol for your location.

I also like that full protection against IPV6, DNS, and WebRTC leaks is available — some top competitors, like VyprVPN, make you manually disable IPv6 and WebRTC to avoid leaks. I tested Norton Secure VPN’s leak protection by running leak tests on servers in 10+ countries, and I never experienced any leaks.

While Norton Secure VPN supports Tor traffic on its servers, the support reps told me they don’t recommend using the two together — they said doing that could cause connectivity issues. If you need a good VPN for accessing dark web sites, I recommend ExpressVPN since it supports Tor traffic on all of its servers, or ProtonVPN because it lets you browse Tor sites in normal browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and Opera).

Besides those features, Norton Secure VPN also offers a couple of extra features, including split-tunneling, an ad blocker, and a Wi-Fi security tool.

Split-Tunneling

Norton Secure VPN Features

Norton Secure VPN has split-tunneling on Android and Windows, which lets you exclude apps from the VPN tunnel, but it doesn’t work very well — on Android, I tried excluding my Chrome and Firefox browsers from the VPN connection, but they still used it 50% of the time. Also, on Windows, I excluded Chrome, Firefox, and Opera from the Norton Secure VPN, but they still used the VPN connection.

If you’re interested in using split-tunneling, I recommend getting Private Internet Access or ProtonVPN instead — their split-tunneling features actually work, and they’re also more convenient because they let you split-tunnel IP addresses in addition to apps.

Overall, I’m not happy with Norton Secure VPN’s split-tunneling feature — it only works sometimes on Android, and doesn’t work at all on Windows.

Ad Tracker Blocking

Norton Secure VPN FeaturesNorton Secure VPN has a good ad blocker. In my tests, the ad blocker stopped most ads from loading on ad-heavy sites like media outlets and social media, which made websites load faster and look much cleaner.

And unlike many VPNs, Norton Secure VPN’s ad blocker is available on all platforms. The only drawback of Norton Secure VPN’s ad blocker is it doesn’t also include malware blocking like Private Internet Access’s PIA MACE and ProtonVPN’s NetShield.

Overall, Norton Secure VPN does an excellent job of getting rid of those annoying ads, and it works on all apps.

Wi-Fi Security

Norton Secure VPN FeaturesI like Norton Secure VPN’s Wi-Fi Security feature, which keeps you safe on unsecured and compromised networks. It uses advanced scanning to identify dangerous networks, and it alerts you when you connect to one. I also like that you can configure the app to automatically connect you to a VPN server when it detects that you have connected to a dangerous network.

My only problem is that Wi-Fi Security is only available on iOS and Android. It’s one of my favorite features offered by Norton Secure VPN, and I’d like to see this feature added to the desktop apps, too.

Overall, Norton Secure VPN protects your data on unsecured and compromised networks. Its Wi-Fi Security feature alerts you to dangerous networks and automatically connects you to a VPN server when you attempt to connect to a dangerous server.

Norton Secure VPN Privacy & Security

Norton Secure VPN has a no-logs policy, but in my opinion it’s not strict enough. While Norton Secure VPN doesn’t log the sites you visit or the files that you download, it logs your IP address.

Norton Secure VPN says it keeps records of your IP address to determine appropriate language settings and to deliver content to your device, but this explanation on the website is too vague and the customer support representatives were unable to provide me with a clear answer as to why the provider stores IP addresses. I can’t fully trust a VPN that logs users’ IP addresses because it puts their privacy at risk — Norton Secure VPN can turn this information over to authorities if requested.

In addition to IP addresses, Norton Secure VPN also logs your email address (for enrollment and billing purposes) and your bandwidth (for security, network operations, and support).

Norton Secure VPN Privacy & Security

The logging of IP addresses is even worse because Norton Secure VPN is headquartered in the US, which is part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances (a group of countries that share surveillance data). If the US government were to request user data, Norton Secure VPN would have to share user information with law enforcement. Private Internet Access is also based in the US, but Private Internet Access has proven in court many times that it doesn’t store user data, and its no-logs policy was also verified in an independent audit.

Overall, Norton Secure VPN doesn’t log user traffic or files that you download, but it logs users’ IP addresses and is headquartered in a 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances country. Frankly, Norton Secure VPN’s no-logs policy isn’t on par with the top VPN providers on the market — but it’s also not the worst I’ve seen.

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

I ran speed tests by connecting to a server in all the 30+ countries where Norton Secure VPN has a server and experienced an average speed decrease of 55%. This is typically not an acceptable average drop in speed, but I live in a country (Romania) that has really fast speeds — so, I asked my colleague in the US to also run speed tests to get a more fair picture of Norton Secure VPN’s speeds, and he reported a 40% decrease, which is about average.

Norton Secure VPN has very fast speeds on local servers, and even maintains pretty fast speeds on some distant servers as well. That said, I did experience some noticeable slowdowns on very remote servers in Japan and Singapore.

I first ran a speed test without being connected to the VPN to get a baseline for my speeds:

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

Next, I used Norton Secure VPN’s quick-connect feature (called Auto-Select Region), which connected me to the fastest server in Romania. I experienced a 40% speed decrease, but my speeds barely took a hit and I was able to surf the web as if I wasn’t using a VPN at all — all websites loaded instantly, HD videos on Amazon Prime loaded instantly and didn’t buffer when I skipped through them, and 4K videos on YouTube loaded instantly and didn’t buffer.

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

I then connected to a US server and my speeds decreased by about 54%, but the slowdown was still minimal. All the sites I accessed loaded instantly, and HD and 4K videos on YouTube loaded instantly too — I only experienced minor buffering while skipping through the 4K videos.

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

Finally, I connected to a Japanese server, and my speeds decreased by a whopping 73%. My connections were still pretty fast, but I did experience some noticeable slowdowns — 50% of the sites I visited took about 3–5 seconds to load, and 4K videos on YouTube took about 8–10 seconds to load and there was noticeable buffering when I skipped through them. On the plus side, HD videos on Amazon Prime continued to load instantly, and my VoIP calls never froze or dropped.

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

But, I wanted to see what kind of speeds my colleague had in the US. My colleague first conducted a speed test without being connected to the VPN to get his baseline.

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

Then, he used Auto-select region and was connected to a server in Ohio. He had a decrease in speed of 14%, and his online activities were barely affected. Amazon Prime TV shows and movies started immediately and websites loaded right away.

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

When my colleague connected to a server in Spain, his speed dropped by a staggering 88%. However, HD videos began instantly, websites loaded without any delay, and there was no freezing or glitches during multiple Zoom calls.

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

Finally, he connected to a server in Australia. My colleague reported only a 32% drop in speed, but he noticed a similar slowdown as I did when I was connected to a distant server in Japan. It took about 10 seconds for videos to start and websites loaded in 3-5 seconds. But his Zoom calls were perfect quality, and he was able to play video games without much lag.

Norton Secure VPN Speed & Performance

Overall, Norton Secure VPN has very fast speeds on local servers and maintains good speeds on distant servers, but I experienced noticeable slowdowns while streaming and browsing on very distant servers. That said, my VoIP calls were smooth on all locations.

Norton Secure VPN Servers & IP Addresses

Norton Secure VPN doesn’t publicly publish the number of servers it has, but a Norton Secure VPN support rep confirmed the server count is over 2,000, which is pretty good. Top competitors have larger server networks, including ExpressVPN (3,000+ servers in 90+ countries) and CyberGhost VPN (8100+ servers in 90+ countries), but Norton Secure VPN still has servers spread out all over the world to help you find a nearby server that’s not overcrowded. The majority of Norton Secure VPN’s servers are located in Europe, but they’re also present in North America, Asia, and the Middle East.

Norton Secure VPN only lets you connect to a country, and not a city (ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access both allow you to choose a server in a particular city). So, you can’t get around sports blackouts if you’re traveling to a city in the US where the game you want to watch is not available on streaming platforms.

Torrenting is allowed, but only on dedicated servers. Unfortunately, there isn’t a list of P2P servers — instead, you need to use the Torrent-Optimized Region option, which will automatically connect you to a P2P server. Whenever I used that option, I was always connected to a Dutch server. I tried asking the support reps how many P2P servers there are and how many server locations allow torrenting, but they couldn’t answer my questions. To be honest, ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access have much better P2P support, as they allow torrenting across all of their servers.

Norton Secure VPN doesn’t have dedicated IP addresses. Dedicated IP addresses are IP addresses that are only assigned to you. If you need a dedicated IP, PrivateVPN offers free dedicated IPs, and Private Internet Access and CyberGhost VPN charge a small fee for one.

Overall, Norton Secure VPN has a pretty strong server network with servers located in most parts of the world. However, it only allows torrenting on dedicated servers and they all appear to be in the Netherlands, which is pretty inconvenient.

Norton Secure VPN Streaming & Torrenting

I think Norton Secure VPN is pretty good for streaming — in my tests, it worked with Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime, but it wasn’t able to access Disney+.

If you need a VPN for Disney+, I recommend trying out ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access instead, as they both provide consistent access to that platform — and many other top streaming services as well.

Norton Secure VPN Streaming & Torrenting

And while Norton Secure VPN has P2P support, I don’t think it’s very good — it only allows P2P traffic on dedicated servers, which the VPN app automatically connects you to. I couldn’t find out how many torrenting servers there are, but I was always connected to Dutch servers in my tests. So, users in Europe might get fast P2P speeds, but users in other parts of the world will have to put up with slower downloads.

My top VPN choices for torrenting are ExpressVPN, ProtonVPN, and Private Internet Access. Each of these providers allows torrenting on tons of servers, has excellent speeds and top-notch security, and works with the most popular torrenting clients.

Overall, Norton Secure VPN is good for streaming but not a very great choice for torrenting. Norton Secure VPN works with most top streaming sites, but it can’t access Disney+. Also, torrenting is only allowed on dedicated servers in the Netherlands.

Norton Secure VPN Bypassing Censorship

Norton Secure VPN is unable to overcome internet firewalls and doesn’t work in restrictive countries like China and Iran.

Norton Secure VPN Plans & Pricing

Norton Secure VPN has monthly and yearly plans for 1, 5, and 10 devices. The monthly and yearly plans for 5 devices are the best deals (the yearly plan that covers 5 devices is the same price as the yearly plan that covers 1 device and costs 4,99 $ / месяц), but be aware that Norton Secure VPN doubles the price after the first year.

You can also get Norton Secure VPN as part of Norton’s 360 antivirus packages — Norton’s antivirus consistently scores top marks in all of our tests, and it’s our #1 choice for the best antivirus in 2022.

While Norton Secure VPN accepts 6 types of credit cards and PayPal, I wish there was an option to pay with crypto.

Norton Secure VPN offers a very generous 60-day money-back guarantee for yearly plans (most VPNs offer a 30-day money-back guarantee). For monthly plans, Norton Secure VPN offers a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Norton Secure VPN Ease of Use: Mobile & Desktop Apps

Norton Secure VPN has intuitive apps for Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS. It doesn’t have a Linux app — I really like ExpressVPN and Mullvad VPN’s Linux apps.

I installed Norton Secure VPN’s apps on my iOS and Android smartphones in 1 minute, and the process took a swift 1-2 minutes on my Windows 10 PC and MacBook Pro.

Android

Norton Secure VPN Ease of Use: Mobile & Desktop Apps

Norton Secure VPN’s Android app is feature-rich and very easy to use.

The quick-connect feature automatically connects you to the fastest server based on your location. And I like how simple it is to manually connect to a server — the list of countries appears when you click on the location icon at the bottom of the page. My only complaint with connecting to a server is that there is no option to filter servers by speed.

The Android app uses WireGuard, and I like that you get all of Norton Secure VPN’s features, including a kill switch, an ad blocker, and the Wi-Fi Security feature. Split-tunneling is also available, but it unfortunately only works sometimes.

Also, Norton Secure VPN’s intuitive design makes it easy to find each feature. If you’re new to VPNs, you’ll like how Norton Secure VPN provides a brief explanation for all of its features.

Overall, I like Norton Secure VPN’s Android app. It’s feature-rich, secure, and has a very user-friendly design — it’s just a shame that the split-tunneling feature doesn’t work well.

iOS

Norton Secure VPN Ease of Use: Mobile & Desktop Apps

Norton Secure VPN’s iOS app is user-friendly, but it isn’t as secure as the Android app.

The design is the same and you can connect to a server with one click, but the iOS app is missing a kill switch. In case you need an iOS VPN app that comes with a kill switch, I recommend checking out ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access.

The iOS app is also missing split-tunneling (TunnelBear is one of the only VPNs that has this feature on iOS) — but this isn’t a huge drawback, considering that split-tunneling only works 50% of the time on Android, and doesn’t work at all on Windows.

On the plus side, the iOS app comes with the ad blocker, the Wi-Fi Security feature, and WireGuard.

Overall, Norton Secure VPN’s iOS app is missing a kill switch and split-tunneling, but it’s still easy to use and includes other great features.

Windows/Mac (Desktop)

Norton Secure VPN Ease of Use: Mobile & Desktop Apps

Like the mobile apps, Norton Secure VPN’s desktop apps are easy to use. The apps have a quick-connect feature, which works really well. The apps also make it simple to manually connect to a server — there’s a dropdown menu of countries, and there’s an on and off slider that indicates if you’re connected to a server.

I’d normally consider the Windows app to be better because it comes with split-tunneling (most VPNs don’t have split-tunneling on macOS, except ExpressVPN) — unfortunately, split-tunneling never worked when I tested it on the Windows app.

Overall, Norton Secure VPN’s desktop apps are very easy to use, but it’s a shame that the split-tunneling feature doesn’t work on Windows.

Norton Secure VPN’s Apps: Is Norton Secure VPN Easy to Use?

Norton Secure VPN has user-friendly apps for iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS. The mobile and desktop apps have different designs, but they are all easy to navigate.

The Android app is the most feature-rich with an ad blocker, a kill switch, and the Wi-Fi Security feature — it also has split-tunneling, but it only works 50% of the time. The iOS app has most of the same features, but it’s missing a kill switch, so it’s not as secure as the Android app, and split-tunneling (which isn’t a huge drawback).

The Windows and macOS apps are pretty much the same — they both come with an ad blocker, a kill switch, and the Wi-Fi Security feature. The Windows app also has split-tunneling, but it never worked in my tests.

Norton Secure VPN Customer Support

Norton Secure VPN Customer Support

Norton Secure VPN has a small support library with good setup and troubleshooting guides and in-depth frequently asked questions (FAQs) section. There’s also 24/7 live chat, support on social media platforms, and phone support (but no email support).

The support library is pretty good — it displays Quick Help guides on topics like Download and Install, Buy and Renew, and Help Protect & Fix, and the library also has a search option. While I’d like to see Norton Secure VPN display all of the guides on the support page like CyberGhost VPN does, I like how the information in the support library is very detailed and thorough. I found the support guides very helpful, as they allowed me to resolve most of my issues. That said, I would like Norton Secure VPN to add video tutorials for setup like ExpressVPN and IPVanish offer.

On the other hand, Norton does provide a forum with an active community where you can post your questions or issues and interact with other users.

Norton Secure VPN is one of the few VPNs that has phone support. It covers 50+ countries, and the availability differs depending on the country (many locations get 24/7 support). I tested the phone support line for my country (Romania) several times, and I was connected to a live agent after answering a couple of automated questions. All the reps I talked to were friendly, and some provided me with good answers — but there were also many reps that weren’t knowledgeable and couldn’t answer my questions or solve my issues.

I’m not a fan of Norton Secure VPN’s live chat support. I don’t like the extra steps users are required to take before being connected to a live chat representative — I first had to complete a form and then chat with a bot (the process takes 30-40 seconds) before speaking with a live chat rep. Most top VPNs connect you instantly with a support rep. Even after completing the form and answering questions from the bot, I had to wait up to 1 minute to be connected to someone. Most support reps were helpful, but I also dealt with reps who weren’t knowledgeable or responsive. But I like that Norton Secure VPN has live chat in 14 languages.

Norton Secure VPN Customer Support

Norton Secure VPN doesn’t have email support, so I tested its social media support on Facebook and Twitter. There are links to the social media pages on the contact page, so it’s very easy to ask a question this way. On average, I got a response in 20-30 minutes, and the answers were usually helpful. Most VPNs don’t use social media as a support platform so I really like this option.

Overall, Norton Secure VPN has decent customer support. The support section has informative FAQs and guides, and this is one of the few VPNs that has social media support. But I had mixed results with the 24/7 live chat and phone support.

Is Norton Secure VPN Worth Trying Out in 2022?

Norton Secure VPN is secure, very fast, easy to use, and an overall good choice for browsing, streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, or BBC iPlayer, and gaming.

Norton Secure VPN has industry-standard security features like 256-bit AES encryption, a no-logs policy, a kill switch, and secure protocols. It also has advanced security features like full leak protection, and extra features like an ad blocker and Wi-Fi Security. In my speed tests, Norton Secure VPN maintained very good speeds on local servers in Romania and distant servers in the US, but I experienced slower speeds for streaming, gaming, and browsing on distant servers in Japan.

That said, Norton Secure VPN has a lot of room for improvement. It keeps logs of IP addresses, it only allows P2P traffic on dedicated servers (all of which seem to be located in the Netherlands). What’s more, it has a split-tunneling feature but it barely works, it doesn’t work in restrictive countries like China, and its phone and live chat support is not always helpful.

Norton Secure VPN has monthly and yearly plans for 1, 5, and 10 devices. It has a generous 60-day money-back guarantee for the annual plans and a 14-day money-back guarantee for the monthly plans. You can also get Norton Secure VPN for free when you purchase Norton 360, our #1 choice for best antivirus in 2022.

Is Norton Secure VPN free?

Norton Secure VPN doesn’t have a free plan. But Norton Secure VPN has a lengthy 60-day money-back guarantee for its yearly plans and a 14-day money-back guarantee for its monthly plans. The 60-day refund window is double the standard length of competitors’ money-back guarantees. Norton Secure VPN is also included for free if you purchase Norton 360, which is our #1 choice for the best internet security suite in 2022.

There are free VPNs on the market, but I don’t recommend that you use them. They typically lack essential security features, usually have slow speeds, limit how much data you can use, log what sites you visit and files you download, have poor customer support, and buggy apps.

I recommend that you purchase a low-cost premium VPN like Norton Secure VPN to ensure you get the best security, speeds, and value. Norton Secure VPN offers inexpensive subscription plans, and it has monthly and yearly plans for 1, 5, and 10 devices. The yearly plan that covers 5 devices offers the best value and is comparable to other top VPNs, and the monthly plan that covers 5 devices is cheaper than many VPNs’ monthly subscriptions.

Does Norton Secure VPN work with Netflix?

Yes, Norton Secure VPN can access Netflix. It also works with other top streaming services, such as Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer, and HBO Max, but it can’t access Disney+.

That said, I think the best VPN for Netflix is still ExpressVPN because it consistently works with 10+ Netflix libraries. In addition, it can access 65+ other streaming apps, and provides the fastest streaming speeds on the market.

Does Norton Secure VPN allow torrenting?

Yes, but it only allows torrenting on dedicated P2P servers, and all of them seem to be located only in the Netherlands, which is very inconvenient.

I honestly think there are much better P2P VPNs out there — for example, ExpressVPN allows torrenting across 3,000+ servers in 90+ countries, supports port forwarding via a dedicated router app that’s easy to install and use, has high-end security features, and provides the fastest downloads on the market.

Is Norton Secure VPN safe?

Norton Secure VPN is secure, but it has some flaws.

I like that it uses bank-grade 256-bit AES encryption, has a no-logs policy, provides a kill switch, uses secure protocols, has full leak protection, and offers Wi-Fi Security that protects you on unsecured and compromised networks.

But I don’t like that Norton Secure VPN logs your IP address and doesn’t have obfuscation, which hides your VPN traffic from your ISP and other third parties. If you want a VPN with obfuscation and a strict no-logs policy that has also been audited, I recommend you take a look at ExpressVPN.
